Health

Health care is the prevention, treatment, and management of illness and the preservation of mental and physical well being through the services offered by the medical, nursing, and allied health professions. According to the World Health Organization, health care embraces all the goods and services designed to promote health, including ?preventive, curative and palliative interventions, whether directed to individuals or to populations?. The organised provision of such services may constitute a health care system.

Public health is "the science and art of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organised efforts and informed choices of society, organisations, public and private, communities and individuals." It is concerned with threats to the overall health of a community based on population health analysis. The population in question can be as small as a handful of people or as large as all the inhabitants of several continents (for instance, in the case of a pandemic). Public health has many sub-fields, but is typically divided into the categories of epidemiology, biostatistics and health services. Environmental, social and behavioral health, and occupational health, are also important fields in public health.

Workers in healthcare are concerned with the health and well-being of people. As well as caring for those who are ill, there are opportunities to investigate new and better treatments, and to educate people about healthier lifestyles.

Hours of work vary and some jobs involve evening, weekend or shift work. Part-time work is possible in many jobs. There are many different working environments, including hospitals and clinics, day care centres and residential homes, GP surgeries, laboratories, pharmacies, opticians and dental practices. Some work may involve visiting patients in their homes.

Healthcare workers need strong communication skills. They must be able to work on their own initiative while also working well in a team. A genuine concern for the well-being of patients is important. Scientific ability is essential for a number of jobs.

Hospitality

Hospitality refers to the relationship process between a guest and a host, and it also refers to the act or practice of being hospitable, that is, the reception and entertainment of guests, visitors, or strangers, with liberality and goodwill. Hospitality frequently refers to the hospitality industry jobs for hotels, restaurants, casinos, catering, resorts, clubs and any other service position that deals with tourists. Hospitality is also known as the act of generously providing care and kindness to whomever is in need.

Catering and hospitality is concerned with providing the public with food, drink and accommodation. It is an industry that is fast-moving and constantly changing and developing, as can be seen from exposure on television programmes and in newspaper supplements, tourism brochures and magazines.

Workers in the Hospitality industry are often at their busiest during evenings, weekends and public holidays, and many can expect long, irregular hours and shift and weekend working. However this may be compensated by the greater flexibility that shift-working can provide. Some people work in clean, comfortable surroundings, but kitchen environments can be hot, humid and noisy. Staff may be on their feet for long periods.

Types of Employers include:

Hotels and guest houses offering accommodation from budget to luxury;

Restaurants, including themed restaurants, pub restaurants and fast food outlets;

Pubs, clubs and bars, including bar facilities in hotels and restaurants;

Theme parks, cinemas, museums, art galleries and leisure resorts;

Schools, colleges, hospitals, nursing homes, railways, airports and cruise ships.

Most jobs involve dealing with the public, so staff must be friendly, polite and, most importantly, enjoy giving good customer service. They should have stamina and be able to work well in a team. Staff at management level also need good organisational and problem-solving skills.

Leisure (including sport & tourism):

The leisure, sport and tourism industries offer a very wide range of jobs. Most have the shared aim of helping people to enjoy their leisure time. Career opportunities are available in:

Leisure centre work, for example as a manager, assistant or lifeguard;

Coaching and instructing, in health and fitness, horse riding, outdoor activities, yoga or a specific sport;

Professional sport, for example as a footballer, horse-racing jockey or golfer

Entertainment and gambling - working in cinemas, theme parks, fairgrounds, betting shops, casinos or bingo clubs;

Travel and tourism, for example as a holiday representative, holiday centre manager, tour manager, tourist information centre assistant or travel agent.

Working conditions vary. Some jobs are based indoors, in offices, shops, gymnasiums, sports halls or cinemas, while others, in areas such as horse riding, instruction in outdoor activities and fairground work, are largely based outdoors. Some jobs call for large amounts of physical training and activity.

Most people in leisure, sport and tourism work irregular hours that can often involve shift, evening, weekend and bank holiday work. A number of jobs, particularly in tourism, are affected by seasonal variations.

Employers include large leisure companies, tour operators, tourist boards, local authorities, leisure centres, health and fitness clubs, hotels and sports clubs. The leisure and sport industries are growing as people continue to become more health conscious, as well as having more leisure time and greater disposable income.

An ability to communicate well with people and a helpful attitude are important in most of these jobs. Organisational and teamwork skills are often required and sometimes good business skills. A professional sportsperson needs to have an exceptionally high level of skill and be totally dedicated to their sport.
